All the rich people can think about is where they are going to venture off to or what expensive item are they going to spoil themselves with next. It represents the people who wildly pursued wealth, bitterly failed, while the rich people only care about themselves, and feel like the poor are irrelevant. The valley, a wasteland between West Egg and New York, is where the poor and socially washed up reside and barely make enough money to survive. The Valley of Ashes is a clear symbol to the pursuit of riches and the American Dream. All of these symbols describe a key element in the book and in which the author is trying to get across to the reader. I discovered three major symbols in the book: The Valley of Ashes, the green light on the end of the dock, and the eyes of Doctor T.J. Symbolism is a major factor to helping further understand The Great Gatsby.
